Usain Bolt is the fastest human being on Earth. He's actually the fastest person in human history if you go by the 100-meter dash, in which Bolt holds the world record at 9.58 seconds.

The New Yorker recently explored how fast Bolt could run the mile if he really dedicated himself to it. That premise is more interesting than you might think — Bolt stands 6-foot-5 and weighs just over 200 pounds, while the best longer-distance runners tend to be much shorter and skinnier. Basically, sprinters need lots of muscle to propel short bursts of speed while runners who compete in longer distance benefit from carrying less weight.
