Federal and local authorities were searching Saturday for a lone gunman who killed five people at a crowded shopping mall in this small town north of Seattle, then disappeared into the evening darkness.
Witnesses who were inside the Cascade Mall described a chaotic scene of screaming and bloodshed after the shooter entered a Macy’s store around 7 p.m. Friday shouting names, then firing repeatedly from a rifle in the makeup department.
Four women died at the scene and a man later succumbed to his injuries. Their identities were not immediately released, but police said they ranged in age from a teen-aged girl to senior citizens.
Investigators said it was too early to ascribe a motive, but there was no indication at this stage that the killings were an act of terrorism.
